Tongue Scraping
Tongue Scraping
Tongue scraping is an Ayurvedic practice of detoxification.
Overnight, our bodies go through detoxification- our bowels, livers, lymph. Some of the detoxification is evident on our tongue as a white/ yellow/ gray coating which appears in the morning.
Tongue scraping removes this build up which is called “Ama” in Ayurveda and is considered toxic.
Tongue scraping should be done first thing in the morning before drinking water, eating or drinking. It can remove bacteria which can contribute to Halistosis or bad breath. In Ayurveda, it is said to improve our sense of taste.
Tongue scrapers are usually made from stainless steel or copper. My preference is copper as copper has anti-bacterial properties.
How to use a tongue scraper:
Hold the handles of the tongue scraper with 2 hands.
Place the clean curved edge at the back of the tongue and drag forward with light pressure.
Rinse the tongue scraper and several times till Ama is removed
Rinse tongue scraper and store in a dry place.
